COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — Cologne has appointed Timo Schultz as coach in a bid to climb away from the Bundesliga relegation zone.Schultz takes over from Steffen Baumgart and will prepare the team for its next game against promoted Heidenheim on Jan. 13, Cologne said on Thursday. The 46-year-old Schultz previously coached FC Basel in Switzerland and St. Pauli in the German second division.“He has personality and the competence to raise the performance potential of our squad,” Cologne managing director Christian Keller said. “If we take on everything with complete conviction and all our efforts in every area together with Timo Schultz, then we will stay up.”Baumgart and the club agreed to part ways last month after a loss at Union Berlin ensured Cologne remained in the relegation zone for the winter break. Broncos' playoff drought now at 8 years, but they have a shot at first winning season since '16

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Although the Broncos didn't end their playoff drought in Sean Payton's first season in Denver, they do have a chance at snapping two other unseemly skids Sunday in Las Vegas.A win by the Broncos (8-8) in the season finale would snap a streak of seven straight losses to the Raiders (7-9) which in some ways is more disconcerting to them than the 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs that Denver vanquished with a resounding 24-9 win over Kansas City in Week 6.“I don’t even know that I was aware that we had lost that many games to Las Vegas/Oakland," Payton said. “I think what would be important for us is to get to our ninth win.”A ninth victory would give the Broncos their first winning season since 2016, the year after they rode Von Miller's prime-of-his-career brilliance and Peyton Manning to a win in Super Bowl 50. LONDON — Rishi Sunak said his “working assumption” is that he won’t call a U.K. general election until the second half of 2024.In his clearest hint yet at timing for the poll, the British Prime Minister told ITV: “My working assumption is we’ll have a general election in the second half of this year.”Sunak, whose party is trailing in the polls, must call an election by 2025 under U.K. rules. But within those limits, the timing is in his gift. His comments come amid pressure from the opposition parties to call an election in the spring. Speculation has long swirled in Westminster about the timing of the vote. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced recently that the spring budget will take place earlier than usual on March 6. Cuts to the national insurance tax are also being rolled out this month in a move seen as a pre-election gambit. Local elections are due to take place in May.

Foreign conflicts are taking up a lot of Biden’s time as he fights for his political future at home

(CNN) — Speaking to a group of Democratic donors at a Washington hotel last month, President Joe Biden wanted to underscore just how much of his time lately has been spent confronting a chaotic world.Seventy-five percent of his job, Biden guessed, is consumed dealing with foreign leaders and traveling the world.Whether or not that’s an accurate calculation of how Biden spends his days — aides said it sounded elevated amid an intensive stretch of diplomacy — Biden’s remark underscored a looming quandary for himself and his team: how do you respond to two overseas wars that have divided Americans and consumed vast swaths of time while also running a campaign whose stakes are nothing less than the future of American democracy? In polls, most Americans do not rank foreign policy near the top of their list of concerns.
