Milan’s La Scala and Paris Opera commission opera based on Umberto Eco’s “The Name of the Rose”

MILAN (AP) — Italian composer Francesco Filidei has been commissioned by Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and the Paris Opera to write a new opera based on Umberto Eco’s most famous novel “The Name of the Rose,” the opera houses announced Friday. The world premiere has already been scheduled, at La Scala on April 27, 2025, conducted by Ingo Metzmacher and starring mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsay and baritone Lucas Meachem. La Scala’s general manager, Dominique Meyer, called the new commission “a very important opera.” “The Name of the Rose” was Eco’s debut novel, a medieval thriller set in a monastery. It catapulted him to international celebrity and was made into a 1986 film starring Sean Connery. Eco died at home in Milan in 2016.Filidei is working on two versions, one in Italian and one in French, the second to premiere at the Paris Opera. A man who stole a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue truck and led police officers on a chaotic chase appeared in front of a judge.On Friday morning, 31-year-old Aljenard Lekambrick was in court after, police said, the crime he committed was a “prime picking” for the suspect as the fire truck he took was being used in a training exercise by MDFR Fire Station 31. Russia has added Karim Khan, a British prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, on a “wanted” list after the Hague-based court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian independent media outlet Mediazona reported that Khan’s photo and personal information are visible on the Interior Ministry’s database, listed as “wanted on felony charges.”In March, Russia began criminal cases against Khan and three ICC judges on the basis of them having committed “signs of crimes” under Russian law. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating after a kitten was thrown from a car window onto a busy provincial highway.OPP Highway Safety Division said the kitten was reportedly thrown out of a car on the eastbound portion of Highway 403 near Waterdown around 10:45 a.m. on Friday. (AP) — No more premium stay in a galaxy far, far away: Disney World’s “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser” hotel is making its last voyage at the end of September.The hotel at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida opened in March 2022 and lets guests create and live out “Star Wars” immersive adventures. It costs nearly $5,000 per couple for a two-night stay.“This premium, boutique experience gave us the opportunity to try new things on a smaller scale of 100 rooms, and as we prepare for its final voyage, we will take what we’ve learned to create future experiences that can reach more of our guests and fans,” a company spokesperson said in a statement Friday. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — San Francisco officials are investigating Twitter after six former employees allege that owner Elon Musk’s leadership team broke laws by turning the company’s headquarters into a “Twitter Hotel” for workers who were pushed to stay up late to transform the social media platform.The San Francisco Department of Building Inspection said Friday that it has opened a new complaint and will be conducting an investigation into the new allegations.The San Francisco Chronicle earlier reported on the city’s latest investigation into the company that Musk took over late last year. Toronto police have identified a suspect involved in the fatal stabbing of a man that occurred in broad daylight near Yonge-Dundas Square last week.Just before 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12, emergency crews rushed to the scene in front of The Works, a city-run supervised injection and harm reduction facility at 277 Victoria Street near Yonge-Dundas Square.It’s alleged that there was an altercation between two men, which led to one of them being stabbed. The victim was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries and was pronounced dead a short time later.The victim was identified as 40-year-old Richard Sasaki.On Friday, police said 29-year-old Danyal Khan of no fixed address is wanted for second-degree murder.Police believe the accused fled the area on foot and that Khan may have been there for some time before the altercation.
